Autumn of 1916. The Great War continues for the third year. Platon Chechel, a former police officer mobilized for military service. But this is a cover: he performs unofficial tasks of the command, reveals war crimes in the rear. Fate brings Chechel to provincial Chernihiv, where, among other things, he has to settle a delicate private affair. A large sum of money must be given to the criminals in exchange for evidence of the involvement of Julia, the daughter of a local landowner, in the murder of a millionaire lover. Chechel involuntarily interferes in the interests of the criminal and political underground, and this leads to a chain of brutal murders. Plato also barely avoids death.
